Review of Southern Belles (2005) by George P — 08 Oct 2007
Southern Belles is a parody of southern life through filmography, mainly Gone with the Wind and Thelma and Louise. Anna Faris is not always spot on with her accent, and Laura Breckenridge seems to carry on as the Scarlett quite well. The two portray southern girls named Bell and Belle (thus the movie title) who want to move to Atlanta to make it big.
It's humorous how the film parodies the south through film references, however, the story misses the mark quite often. It is a comedy through and through and does not ever take it self seriously, which is good, but when important stuff comes up, like Anna Faris' character and her near lesbian interest, or when the two Belles talk about how they got their names, the film doesn't seem to slow down and make these moments important or anything more than cliche.
The film is a few steps behind The Dukes of Hazzard, but if you enjoy that sort of comedy, you should give Southern Belles a shot.
