Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Jan Edvard J — 21 Dec 2008
An absolutely spectacular film. At the center is a trio of flawless performances from Streep, Kline, and MacNicol. MacNicol is gentle and charming, filling the screen with warmth at every glance. Kline is surprising and electric and gives some of his best work.
And, of course, Streep deserved every inch of her Oscar. Her performance is out of this world amazing, stretching far and beyond any preconceived notions of acting and transcending the limits of creating a connection with the audience and a shared understanding of the character's pain and suffering.
When Sophie's choice is revealed, it is a shattering piece of acting that stabs through the screen. The direction is perfectly suited to the wonderful screenplay and one is constantly engaged, despite the rather lengthy run time.
Everyone MUST see this film.
