A Stingo Ate My Movie.
Not only is Sophie a victim of the Nazi's, her story is a victim of being overshadowed by the 2nd movie this wants to be. Sophie's Choice could have done without the writer construct entirely. The character of Stingo (and the actor, Peter MacNicol) could be dispatched as efficiently as Sophie's loved ones were by the Nazi's. Meryl Streep earned her Oscar, and keeps this movie compelling.
