Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Liz — 21 Aug 2010
MERYL STREEP! I guess watching so many of her movies is my fault... so I'm not going to complain about having to review a Meryl Streep film. Actually, this time it doesn't matter because I love more than just the acting in this one.
So... where to begin? Ahh... how about Peter MacNicol, Kevin Kline, and Meryl Streep. Peter MacNicol was Stingo, who was the main character, though Sophie was the title character and the most interesting one, she wasn't who we were following, or hearing. Peter MacNicol was also the type of character that you feel awkward for. I felt weird when he was just sitting there. It was a job well done. Kevin Kline is oddly great at being mad. He embodied the mental instability of Nathan Landau and brought it forward, great job. Meryl Streep became and instant sucess after her role as Sophie in this movie, and it's obvious why 1. She had the accents, 2. She had the raw emotion, 3. She is mezmarazing.
The plot was long in some places, and the ending felt brief, and abrupt, but it was done well. The flashback sequences were creativly done, and the slow revealing of character traits and pasts was done nicely.
Overall a great movie, but not my favorite by far.
