Review of Somewhere (2010) by Eden R — 15 Dec 2011
This is a meditative piece by Coppola and not unlike the superior Lost in Translation. The film has moments of insight into the trapdom of celebrity but unfortunately does not use that to move the plot along at any pace or for any great insight.
The casting is interesting. Dorff is an OK actor but not a charisma machine. What is Coppola saying about stardom? I can't help but feel that Lost in Translation is more successful in part because Murray and Johanssen dominate the screen more effectively. Elle Fanning lights up the screen and with her role in Super 8 looks like having a good career (at least till puberty :).
Ultimately the pacing is slow and for that investment there has to be a payoff and that does not happen this time round.
