Review of Somewhere (2010) by Ariel S — 29 Jun 2011
Sofia Coppola on melancholy autopilot. Somewhere strives to be about the banality of fame, the emptiness of success, but never quite brings us characters worth caring about. Stephen Dorf plays Johnny Marco, a famous star who lives his life through a string of one night stands, parties, and press junkets.
That's the film. It's minimalism to the point of banality. I like small movies, I like character pieces, and I love open ended films. But please, give me characters worth watching. In the end, Somewhere goes nowhere and says alot of nothing along the way.
