Review of Somers Town (2008) by Nick C — 23 Aug 2008
Shane Meadows directed 'This is England' which was a great film - and 'dead mans shoes' - which was amazing, so obviously I had pretty high hopes for this one - which turned out to be a big dissapointment in so many ways.
Filming it in black and white did it no favours, not sure why they did,the most enjoyable part of the film was the final 5 mins that were in colour.
Turgoose' character Tommo was such an annoying little screbber, I really wanted the polish lad to punch him in the face really hard, for generally being so ignorant, rude and ,well just a fucking idiot in general.
The soundtrack was dull - I mean it was bland, he's usually good at picking music to heighten or give depth to certain scenes but here it was just the standard guy with an acoustic guitar singing some half arsed song.
The French girl Maria's character, as beautiful and delectable as she was - was not believable at all, I can't think of many people that would take to 2 weirdos (especially screb-boy) so easily, let alone one who is obviously a model in her spare time.
To be fair the 2 main polish actors in this film the father and son were good - so I mean credit where credits due casting them, but all in all this was a big disspointment and im impressed with myself that I didn't walk out before it had actually finished, I must have missed the point but what was this film about? - was it about friendship, or a social/political look at polish workers and immigration? either way it was done in such a dull boring way I wouldn't watch this film again.Boring, dull, ugly dogshit.
