Review of Some Like It Hot (1959) by Deepak C — 15 Jan 2012
'Some Like it Hot' starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, is a thrilling film that mixes romance, action and comedy in an exquisite way.
The film is about two musicians, Joe and Gerald (played by Curtis and Lemmon), who accidentally witness a Mafia murder. In order to escape they disguise themselves as women (Josephine and Daphne) and join an all girls' band, where they meet Sugar (Monroe), and compete for her affections while she is unaware of their true gender.
Although this movie was made in the 40s, the style of the script is not out of date at all. The content of the script can easily be understood by a new audience. Moreover, the mesmerising performances of the actors, and the clever mix of chemistry they have, is appealing to today's audience as much as it was to the audience that watched its first release back in the 1940s. A main aspect of the film is love, which we all know is an everlasting emotion that people from all generations and from all over the world feel and connect to. In addition to this, when sex symbol Marilyn Monroe stars in such a movie, it becomes even more attractive as Monroe, even after her death, still is an inspiration to many young people.
However, despite all these facts that make this film so appealing, there are a few aspects of the movie that make it seem old-fashioned and out of date. For example, many people nowadays prefer colour pictures and would not like the fact that 'Some Like it Hot' is a black and white film. Moreover, some people may find the film boring, as it may be characterised as slow by today's standards.
To conclude, 'Some Like it Hot' is an excellent, and very funny film and a movie everyone should watch and will definitely enjoy.
