Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Jacob W — 28 May 2018
This movie far exceeded my expectations. They took a huge risk in recasting some of the most iconic characters in cinema and made it work exceptionally. There is not a single character in this film that I did not enjoy watching and the story hit all the right notes in attempting to evoke particular emotions with each and every scene. In some sense, I would say that this felt like the most "Star Wars" movie since Disney's purchase of the franchise. It had a great soundtrack that blended the old and new scores very well and incorporated familiar content from past stories into a new one. It was not heavily "fan-serviced" and it didn't take unnecessary risks. It was a perfect balance of the two. In regards to performance, Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover did outstanding jobs in portraying the characters of Han and Lando. They made the characters their own and did not make it feel like an impersonation of Ford and Williams.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am excited to see where they are going with the Solo story. Definitely worth watching.
