Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by David M — 29 May 2018

The second of the "stand alone" Star Wars movies, excluding the Ewoks TV Movies. The action scenes were overly exciting, but that was about it. The first Star Wars overcome his flaws with a perfect montage. Editing all the elements was key. But, on "Solo", at least at a first viewing, most of it was too sloppy. I said many times i've come to hate blurry action,and we have a few of those moments, but I guess the weakest point of the movie was how all the elements and sequences don't flow effortlessy. I know I have a tendency to overlook some bits and pieces that on a second viewing help put it all together (And at least my projection - on old 2D - was too damn dark and with poor contrast). A fewer nods and winks than expected - I least for me, a not-that-hardcore-fan - and thanks for that. Or maybe they flied over my head... About the actors, "Chewie" was perfect, "Han" was OK, I didn't feel any of that forced impersonation that some people were talking about, probably without watching the movie.

Essentially, "Solo" is just a tale of how Han, Chewie and the Millennium Falcon became friends, more a heist movie than a space opera, and I'm good with that, there's no need for everyone story to be a 6 movie ordeal ("Star Wars: Death Star's Janitor - Episode 1") Surprisingly, the connection to the bigger picture - the rebellion - wasn't that cringy... Also, "L3" would do a kick ass duo with "Chopper"!

Maybe if Ron Howard had more time to put it all together we would be looking at a more polished product. Or maybe not, I've seen only 2 or 3 of his films. Wrapping it up, it's a enjoyable movie, good for a weekend afternoon in front of the TV.
