Review of Solitary Man (2009) by John P — 28 Sep 2010
Solitary man is one of those films that sort of plays backwards. By the time it ends things will make sense, but up until just about then, you'll need to be patient with this story.
Michael Douglas does his usual stellar job here, but it is strange seeing an iconic actor like him in such a disturbing and vulnerable role. Given Michael's real-life experiences with women, however, perhaps this role is not as far-fetched as it seems.
One of the highlights of this film for me was seeing Jenna Fischer in a setting beyond her portrayal of Pam Beesly in "The Office," a series I find unforgivably dull and unimaginative. Just as welcome, were the performances of stalwarts Danny Devito and Susan Sarandon.
Solitary Man is an intimate journey into the recesses of its main characters mind. It is an entertaining and thought provoking film that should not be missed. Probably Michael Douglas' best performance since Falling Down.
