Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Scott M — 01 Dec 2010
A coming of age story for an old man is not something I think I've seen before, but that didn't make the story any less cliched. Some of the characters are interesting, including Jesse Eisenberg, Imogen Poots, and Douglas himself, but others failed to add anything to the story and I couldn't help but wish the film focused more on one story rather than trying to tell them all.
The subplot where Douglas befriends a young college student played by Eisenberg is definitely the best subplot of a film that has far too many. I'm a big fan of Koppelman and Levien, but this is not one of their better screenplays, and as directors they don't seem to have much to offer.
