Review of Soldier Blue (1970) by Cathy C — 31 Dec 2007
Violent, watchable western with Vietnam overtones explored by a fictionalised account of the massacre of native american men, women and children at Sand Creek, by US cavalry forces. It had some interesting comments about the social landscape at the time of which the film was made and the film manages to stay away from being preachy until the final fifteen or twenty minutes, which felt a bit like overkill.
Candice Bergen pretty much carries the film on her shoulders as an independent woman, crossing boundaries of racism, gender roles and political ideology, giving the film its generational spokesperson.
Flawed at times but with some merit as well, except for the folksy score.
