Review of Snowpiercer (2013) by Nathan R — 10 Feb 2015
Not even sure what I think about this one yet. It was certainly original. It was tension-filled, and keeps you guessing through the end. Good performances, especially by Tilda Swinton (who I didn't even recognize) and a good dramatic turn by Chris Evans. It is powerful, particularly in the interesting analogies it presents.
On the other hand, it's uniqueness verges on the strangely bizarre, to the point of being unrealistic, or even absurd (which, while likely intentional, I don't always embrace). It is also a very bloody film. While such conflict is necessary to the story, it does get to the point of being gratuitous as times, particularly with use the slow motion. While it seems attempting to create visual interest with the imagery, personally I do have difficulty enjoying such violence no matter how portrayed. Finally, I'm not yet sure whether the allegorical elements are simply surface and readily apparent, or if they are indeed as deep as they might suggest, with additional ideas to be gleaned after additional examination. Looks like I may have to give this some thought. Which, by demanding that from me, is a compliment in itself.
