Review of Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997) by Thomas L — 20 Jun 2009
Fascinating. And one of the most original murder mysteries I've ever seen. It's also the best role I've ever seen for Julia Ormond. This is a full one-eighty from those woman-caught-between-men roles she had just before this (e.
G. Sabrina, Legands of the Fall). This film touches on the Greenland-Denmark tension, which we don't hear much about in the U.S. The whole cast here was terrific. Check out Tom Wilkinson and Jim Broadbent before their movie careers blasted off with The Full Monty and Topsy Turvy, respectively.
Gabriel Byrne's got the whole shadowy cool thing down pat. Like all good mysteries, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye, including a heart-breaking tragedy at the core of it. Gripping stuff.
