Review of Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997) by Wiebke K — 06 Jan 2011
I've been looking for the dvd of this movie everywhere for months, but it seems like I couldn't find the Italian version anywhere... When I finally found it, I immediately bought it and watched it as soon as I found time for it.
As a premise I must say I really loved Peter Hoeg's book this movie is based on. The movie is great, and it really succeed in portraing the cold of Copenhagen's Winter, and the cold that exists in lives of people that live their existence at the margin of society.
What you can't really understand from the movie (but you can find in the book) is the really strong connection between Smilla and the snow, and between Smilla and her mother land (Greenland), and her strong refusal to all thise things imposed to Danes born in Greenland but living in Denmark. Those things are really important in the book, but are obviously very difficult to portrait in a movie.
So, what I can say is that there can't be a real comparison between the book and the movie, since they act "on different levels" - let's say it like that.
And while the book remains a masterpiece of contemporary literature, the movie still is very very enjoyable, and different from the Hollywood thriller and action movies we're so used to.
4 stars.
