Review of Smiley Face (2007) by Mike I — 28 Apr 2009

I dunno. I was severely disappointed with this film, maybe because it was not what I expected, but I honestly didn't laugh nearly as much as I thought I would. John Krasinki's character was great, he was the only well formed character of the whole bunch, and Danny Masterson was great, he really made you believe that character would indeed fuck skulls.

The other main thing I think really disappointed me was the way in which Jane is portrayed. First off, she only smokes at the beginning of the movie, the truth is you can only get so high before it wears off a few hours later. Despite the anachronistic quality of this, it also makes her out to be a complete dumb fuck at all times. There were funny moments, but for the most part the comedy is supposed to lie in the fact that she's a stoned idiot. Even putting aside my personal feelings toward this attitude, for me, it didn't result in laughter. So to see the Jane character stumble through the most idiotic of situations and fuck up every single time, it just made me sigh and think "Gee, I always thought Gregg Araki knew more about his own characters than tired stereotypes". I guess not. Ultimately, a disappointing film.
