Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Alexavier R — 25 Oct 2008
This is, without question, an absolute gem of a comedy. It's very light-hearted yet still retains some of those serious elements one would find in other Bergman films (Seventh Seal, Persona etc..).
However, Bergman strikes just the right tone in this one and, unlike many of his other films, you really enjoy getting wrapped in his tale of mis-matched lovers trying to find the right connections. The cast absolutely gorgeous especially Eva Dahlbeck in the role of actress Desiree.
The film contains certainly some of the sharpest dialogue that Bergman ever penned and the film revels in the humiliation of its characters without being cruel or condescending. It's easily one of my favorite comedies about love and, without being heavy-handed or pretentious, drives home its themes about the insanity of life and love.
