Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Jacob G — 29 Jun 2011
"If people knew the evil caused by listening to others, they would not care about listening and would be far happier.".
Synopsis: A country estate becomes a matchmaking haven in turn-of-the-century Sweden. During a long, lazy summer, eight singles gradually become four couples, often switching partners along the way.
Smiles of a Summer night encompasses many themes. There is a viable battle of the sexes type vibe, with the women criticizing men and visa versa as all of them create a complicated web of secret and forbidden relationships (there is even slight innuendo of lesbianism). Though the battle of the sexes theme is strong in Smiles of a Summer Night, the film probably works best as an analysis of the complications of relationships.
These two themes sound as if this film would be full of deceit, jealousy, and spit, and it is; but do not make the mistake of thinking this is a dark film, because this is a fantastically warm and light-hearted romantic comedy. And it only gets better the further into the film you proceed.
Smiles of a Summer Night is an entertaining and rewarding romantic comedy.
