Review of Slow West (2015) by David E — 17 Apr 2015
Slow West reminds me of True Grit, they are films in which an older more experienced outcast accompanies a much less experienced young person in the old west. Both are great films in their own way. While Slow West starts off as a slow burn, more and more random characters are introduced, and near the end becomes quite intense and unexpected. While at first glance it appears to be a western, in its own way it also is a black comedy. That are many really random, yet intentional, moments of hilarity. There is a seen involving a clothesline and some horses that made the audience just lose it.
The 2 main actors are excellent (Fassbender-of course he was! & Smit-McPhee) and their characters fleshed out well. There are many random characters and events that occur throughout the film, but do end up coming together at the end. Not everyone will love the film's ending (I was ok with it though I did have some questions), but it works.
If you are a fan of westerns, Fassbender, or unique films, made sure to check Slow West out when it plays wider.
