Review of Slow West (2015) by Tony P — 28 Jan 2017
A modern day (2015) production of the Western genre still firmly set in the nineteenth century West of the United States of America, or is it New Zealand?
The story is about a young Scottish man Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee - how's that for a name?) who travels through the US in search of his love interest, Rose Ross.
On the way the rather inexperienced 'tourist' joins forces with native bandit Silas (Michael Fassbender) who is rather more streetwise/West wise in surviving the harsh realities of the nineteenth century. All this coming it a financial price of course to the rather well educated Jay.
What follows over the next hour is a series of encounters or small stories on the journey featuring death and plenty of it.
The film features lush countryside which I only later discovered was provided by a New Zealand filming location rather like The Lord Of The Rings films.
Silas has an ulterior motive we discover quite early on (Rose has a tasty $2000 bounty on her head for murder).
What follows is a bullet laden set piece in Rose's house that ultimately sees death and destruction.
An interesting little film that has all the classic elements of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood Westerns from years gone by.
A worthy watch.
