Review of Sling Blade (1996) by Jason R — 19 Apr 2008
"Some people call it a Sling Blade, I call it a kaiser blade.".
There are a lot of movies that play the "retard card", and try to put a dismentle character in its story to make it touching only by default, but Thornton brings a genuine purpose to his performance, script, and evn to his owndirecting. The ending was quite daunting but it wasn't without merit and cinematic or justifiable purpose. No minute was wasted on repetiveness or showboating how intellectual Karl was, or else I would of known right then this movie was just trying get a cheap pop with its dismentaled main character. Thornton perfectly wrote his character to be a catalyst of virtue that strolled through the lives of many and became a martyr by sacraficing his own freedom to make a few people happy. Brilliant film indeed.
