Review of Sleuth (1972) by Elliot G — 05 Jun 2008
The most impressive aspect of this film is that is accomplishes everything the original did in half the time. Pinter takes the material in a decidedly different direction, especially in the third act, but having seen both versions it's surprising the original hadn't incorporated a similar homoerotic notion.
The big twist doesn't work as well because Law's face is so recognizable. Branagh does his best to spice up the two people talking syndrome, and it sometimes works, but other time it's distracting.
The production design is the best part.
