Review of Sleuth (1972) by Allen D — 31 Jan 2009
The original 1972 film of Anthony Shaffer's cat-and-mouse thriller is one of my favourite films (if not my very favourite film) so the idea of a remake after the travesty of The Wicker Man wasn't wholly appetising.
However the casting of Michael Caine in Laurence Olivier's old role and Jude Law stepping into Caine's younger shoes under the direction of Kenneth Branagh sounded promising and this proves to be an effective reworking of the play thanks to Harold Pinter's acerbic adaptation, a clean sharp visual sense and fine acting.
Not as much sheer delicious fun as the original (which is almost an hour longer) but still an above average and mentally stimulating experience.
