Review of Sleepers (1996) by Luigi V — 20 Oct 2010
I was trying to think for a long time what the problem is in this movie, and I think I figured it out; the boys have a strong relationship with the priest, that is obvious. It is also obvious that he cares very much for their well-being.
But the camaraderie between the boys themselves is not convincing, especially when they are adults. This movie tried too hard to be epic and grandiose, a story from childhood into adulthood (think an attempt at "Once Upon a Time in America"); the only problem is that the last third of the film is without much meaning except when the boys discuss the problems with their priest.
The unsettling subject matter at the prison is handled well, but the film never really gels as a whole. You won't be bored, but you also won't be sold on the idea.
