Review of Six Degrees of Separation (1993) by Bob W — 27 Jan 2009
To be "fabulous" or humane? To live in chaos or under control? The lily-white wife of an upper-crust New York art dealer (the amazing Stockard Channing) struggles with these questions when suddenly "seduced" by a young black man on the make (Will Smith in his first "respectable" performance) in this highly intelligent and entertaining commentary on race and society.
Eventually she figures out she can have it all, truly embracing "color" in her surprisingly sterile world. Channing's journey is alternately hysterical and poignant with a beautiful cathartic conclusion, and her performance ranks as one of the most brilliant by any actress in the history of the cinema.
