Review of Six Degrees of Separation (1993) by Terry M — 19 Oct 2018
"Chaos , Control. Chaos, Control. You like, You Like?".
I'm rewatching the film version of one of my favorite plays, John Guare's SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION.
I love this film... but it still doesn't match the brilliance of the original Broadway production. Stockard Channing is wonderful in the film but not nearly as amazing as she was on stage... it's still the best performance/play I've seen on the stage.
The original broadway cast also included John Cunningham, Kelly Bishop, a young James Cameron Mitchell, Anthony Rapp and a brilliant Courtney B. Vance (who should have been cast in the film instead of Will Smith).
Fred Schepisi directed the fine film version with John Guare adapting his own play.
In fact it's probably Fred Schepisi's best film.
I have no idea how the good the recent revival of SIX DEGREES was but I imagine that nothing can match the original Broadway production directed by the amazing Jerry Zaks.
John Guare's play is still brilliant, Funny, smart and in the end devastating. The play is about ... everything.
As I said I have never seen a stage performance as stunning as Stockyard Channing as Ouisa. Channing's stage performance and the emotional arc of her stage performance still haunts me in the best way.
