Review of Singles (1992) by Trevor R — 06 Mar 2013
It;s amazing how dated the early '90s (and early '90s film-making) looks in Singles...not yet hip the way '70s movies are, but really dated. Despite her top billing, Bridget Fonda really has a small supporting role (opposite Matt Dillon - playing his Entourage character before Entourage was gleam in anyone's eye).
That's too bad because I find Fonda more appealing than Kyra Sedgwick who plays the female lead with more sentiment than emotion. Campbell Scott turns in a strong but predictable performance, I guess if your dad was George C Scott you'd lean toward predictability and solidity and he doesn't disappoint in those regards.
Some over the top direction which is funny if you're willing to forgive the period and pretty much a happy ending which doesn't seem to match the grundge rock undertones except that there isn;t nearlly the grundge influence the marketers suggest, An 80's romantic comedy about relatively real world singles who go to clubs because that's where you meet singles in Seattle.
