Review of Since You Went Away (1944) by Kevin S — 15 Aug 2008
When I first saw this film 30 years ago I remember thinking that Claudette Colbert would make the perfect Mom. Today I find myself thinking that she personifies the ideal wife. What will I be thinking 30 years from now?
How can you not like a film that has Colbert and Agnes Moorehead and Hattie McDaniel and Jennifer Jones (from Okla-freakin-homa) and Joseph Cotton and Lionel Barrymore and Shirley Temple? Since You Went Away is a nostalgic but somewhat long-winded tribute to the service men and women of WWII and the families they left behind.
Did I mention that it's somewhat long-winded? Overtures and intermissions should be the stuff of grandiose epics, not sentimental family dramas. A few more cuts in the editing room would have done wonders for the film's overall eminence (and my overall posterior). My recommendation is this; watch it while sitting on a comfortable pillow.
