Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Derek R — 29 Oct 2014
A lesser effort from what I thought was his groundbreaking Sin City, the almost 10 years in between dulls Sin City 2's possible impact. Doesn't contain the better material of the original. Also not as visually interesting, though some shots still were able to stand out.
Rodriguez doesn't use color as well as in the original. Bruce Willis' presence in the movie is a mistake, I think; it just feels too tacked on and doesn't match the tone of the movie or the original (in which I mean the whole "ghost" thing).
Clive Owen is the better Dwight, so that doesn't help, either. I love Marv, but I think he's used too much here. The stories also don't fit together as well as the first three stories from the first movie feel.
I think Rodriguez just took too much time to revisit Sin City.
