Review of Simon Says (2007) by Private U — 27 Sep 2008
It seems that straight to DVD films these days have alot more substance than meets the eye. "Simon Says" is the latest under rated, unknown film that sits on the shelves at the local video store.
"Simon Says" appears to be your run of the mill "teens go on a woodland adventure and start getting picked off" kind of film, but the backstory is so well rounded and well thought that it makes this worth the time spent watching. However, the low spots to "Simon Says" was the poor secondary acting and cheesey stoner humor. It's baffling that horror films as of late have this idea that there has to be alot of drug use or alcohol abuse to add some form of extra "umph" to the story, but in all reality, it just brings the quality of the film down.
Respectively, "Simon Says" gets one star for putting Crispin Glover in this film as the deranged Stanley/Simon, one star for the intensity in the kill factor and creative, stylish and fast paced murders. The story and plot was fast paced without a boring spot, and an ending that was absolutely worth sticking around earns this another star. Llastly the overall creep factor and gore-fest completes the round up.
Simon says go and check this film out. It is one of those true hidden gems in your video store, and in a wider aspect, a diamond in the rough in the horror film world. It's been a rareity as of late to find something in the horror genre with new and original kills and ideas, but "Simon Says" delivers on all aspects.
