Review of Simon of the Desert (1965) by Henri L — 27 Jul 2009
Bizarre religious 45 min. movie from master Buñuel.
How do you get closer to God? By letting your beard grow, sacrificing yourself by stading on one foot or climbing up on a column in the middle of the desert? Religion is not really evil in the eyes of Buñuel just quite meaningless and silly as... hmmm... hell.
Aestetically this is a wonderful movie. Buñuel can just about do anything and it just makes perfect sense. He can make a coffin come tumbling through the desert by itself and we the audience buy it. He can be completely black and humourous and it all still remains relevant and quite emotionally. This sure must have been an inspiration for The Monthy Python crew when they did "Life of Brian".
"Radioactive Flesh - the latest dance and the last".
