Review of Simon of the Desert (1965) by Max M — 03 Dec 2009
Although the shot of Simon on his pedestal feels iconic, the rest of this short Buñuel film is pretty slight. It has a few funny scenes (kicking the lamb, hell being a nightclub where people are constantly dancing), but it is light on the surrealism one associates with Buñuel and it deals with religion in a totally straightforward manner (a saint is tempted, but does not yield).
