Review of Silent Running (1972) by Luke H — 22 Mar 2008
I heard that this movie has been rated by critics as one of the top 10 science fiction movies of all time.
This reinforces something I already knew before watching it--I just do not get science fiction movies. At all.
In fact, the only work of science fiction I've ever really loved is David Bowie's "Space Oddity." Does that count?
The plot of this movie made no sense to me. You can never be sure if the movie makers were trying to make the main character into a conservationist hero or to warn us that tree-huggers are crazy and dangerous people. Their protaganist really couldn't inspire passion for either argument because he was so flat and unrelatable.
I'm sure I'm probably missing something that all you science fiction fans out there see very clearly... I think I'll stick to my novel adaptations and overly emotional indie flicks from now on and leave you all alone.
