Review of Silent Hill (2006) by Matt W — 14 Aug 2013
You know that feeling when you're watching someone else playing a video game... Boredom. That's what it's called.
That's what happens here.
For the first hour and a half, the central character, Rose, must find her adopted daughter, Sharon- and she does this by walking into random rooms and buildings, which will have a strange being inside it, and she must work out what to do in each situation.
What does this remind you of? A video game, maybe.
The film's structure is made out of constant fades, which just felt like different levels that had been straight out of the game, and it just got so mind-numbingly repetitive. The performances were all sub-par, and Sean bean's whole sub-plot was pointless, and would have saved this film from it's ridiculous bloated run time.
To the film's credit, it did pick up in the last 20 minutes or so with some nice visuals, and sense of interesting story. The film does have impressive visuals throughout, but they never really make much sense, as there is no real explanation for any of it.
There's a large man with a triangle for a head, who has a big sword. Imaginative, but pointless.
When it finished, I felt nothing. I sighed- turned back to normal TV, and started halfway through another episode of 'Friends'.
And then I forgot I watched 'Silent Hill'. It just blended into my day, and disappeared.
Just like 'Silent Hill' did.
Conspiracy?
Nope.
