Review of Side Effects (2013) by Thomas P — 16 Oct 2013
A solid, intense thinking man's thriller.
Tightly knit script and deftly directed, this is a slow burn ride that draws you in and then starts to mess w your head.
Contains style and story elements similar to Basic Instinct, and strong Hitchcockian twists that Alfred would be thrilled by.
A depressed woman briefly sees a new doctor who prescribes a recently marketed medication, and then all hell breaks loose for both of them.
Well written and stylish - a great, smoldering realism that intrigues its audience, and then smoothly shifts gears into each crafty turn.
I picture drug reps everywhere squirming as the characters talk about 'those tv commercials for depression meds.'.
It's an intriguing concept that is well acted, tho the ending is a bit of a let down, but not enough to tarnish the good things accomplished here.
4 out of 5.
