Review of Side Effects (2013) by Ryan C — 29 Dec 2013
"Side Effects" is a character driven performance piece. Each actor is perfectly cast into the dizzying puzzle that is "Side Effects". This is Hitchcock on vicodin - or something like that.
Quite a few Hitchcock movies center on an innocent man accused of something he didn't do - and we follow him on the quest to prove his innocence. "Side Effects" focuses on a character accused of doing something he or she might have actually done (consciously).
It's a fantastic movie (one of Jude Law's best performances) - until we get to the Tell All scene. Once the character's motives are jammed down our throats, it leaves you wishing something else happened.
The ending is wrapped up too quickly (and too neatly?). Still, it's not a bad way for Steven Soderbergh to go out, but if he's got a better one left in him...
