Review of Side Effects (2013) by The Separator _ — 21 Nov 2013
I went in thinking this was one movie, and came out with another.
I really enjoyed this. Soderbergh did a great job of making you are watching one move, and slowly giving you another at the same time. The direction and the way the whole film is orchestrated is very clever. And when I hit the hour mark I absolutely loved it.
The main problem I had was the running time. It definitely drags in the first half, although engaging it doesn't seem to go anywhere. And then something happens that changes everything, but I still can't deny the fact that it dragged for the first 40 minutes.
Rooney Mara gives an interesting performance while Jude Law is really the star of the film. He really drives the film, and as the film progresses you follow Law's character, although you do start to doubt his sanity.
That is why this film works. You never know who is the sane works. Soderbergh makes you doubt everything about anything in the story. That's why it works. I have to finish this review before I sneeze again.
I have a cold. But I still enjoyed it.
