Review of Sicko (2007) by Rainer K — 20 Oct 2011

GREED!

The one thing I'm sure of after watching this film is that Americans have a totally different view on some stuff that's normal in other civilized countries. The US mentality is so different and in some parts just wrong. They stand in their own way to live "American" values because of "political reasons" which is in fact reasonless fear of subversive political powers which don't even exist and they mistake social responsibility with parasitism - everyone gets sick some time and when you never get sick you have to swallow the pill and pay anyways but Americans are apparently too GREEDY to accept that.

I had a nice discussion with some US students in Prague last year about the same topic and Sicko did exactly showcase what they told me - why should the government force someone to care for himself?

(my answer to this rhetoric question: because most people are too stupid to care for themselves... sadly).

Admittedly, such a Universal Health Care System is not without it's flaws and it costs the state a fortune and is sometimes not overly efficient (I'm Austrian, so I know what I'm talking about) but even if it's expensive and I may lose money through it because I'm too healthy it's hopefully the last thing that's dropped by the government because of financial reasons.

About the film itself, it's the second of Moore's films I've seen and like Fahrenheit 9/11 I like it very much - I love Moore's cynicism and I know that he's highly manipulative and tends to present facts in his favor I think I'm critical enough to scrutinize his works but still appreciate them. Would there be some more Michael Moores the world would be certainly a better place (just not too many of them please!).
