Review of Sicko (2007) by Cory W — 31 Mar 2010

DISCLAIMER: Just because I really, really loved this movie doesn't mean that I agree with every single thing Moore said. He had some really good points though...but I'm a critic, not a politician. So, without further ado...

Michael Moore is the master of the political documentary. And "Sicko" is just extra proof to the matter. Regardless of your political beliefs, you've got to admit that he can make a mean movie. Moore uses this film to show is stance on the country's health care system. But Moore's usual commentary is taken over by 20+ stories of people who have suffered greatly under the cruel reign of the insurance companies. Some of the stories will bring you to tears. Moore also investigates the health care systems of Canada, Britain, and France. These three countries are under the Universal Health Care system, which gives all citizens free coverage (with increased taxes, of course). The film hits a soft spot when he reveals the government's mistreatment of the 9/11 volunteers. The film's climax takes Moore and a group of uninsured Americans who travel and are rejected from Guantanamo Bay (the only place in the US with free health care). Then, the group travels to Cuba, where the people with Moore (a group of 9/11 volunteers) get the care that that they deserve.

As a political statement, it is pretty leaned left, but as a movie, it is a great documentary that provides heart-breaking stories, but an uplifting ending.

Overall, Moore presents another great documentary that while slanted, stands up straight in its genre.
