Review of Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997) by Ian M — 22 Jun 2010
Terribly unique. after having seen dicks doc on derrida it would seem that he is incredibly diverse in his subject matter. this is an incredibly difficult film to watch. flanagan is an endearing character at some points and at others difficult to empathize with.
he was one of the longest survivors of cystic fibrosis which led to his inclination toward s&m. seriously some of the hardest footage ive ever had to watch. the physical pain of at the very least 2 scenes is unbearable.
but the bravery of making and watching such a film is a step forward. flanagan is endearing in his own strange capacity and the end of the movie has many rewards for the viewer that can make it there.
despite the physical pain of a number of scenes (one in particular), the most difficult scene in the movie is his death. its terrible and it feels like the thesis (if there is one) of the film. you must be very brave to watch this.
