Review of Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997) by Lyam W — 28 Jul 2008
It's been a week, and I'm still a little queasy. Make no mistake: Bob Flanagan's story is not for the squeamish. "Supermasochist" was not a hyperbolic label. But get past the (exhilarating) intensity of the abuse to which he willingly submits and you'll find a lyrical portrait of life with debilitating illness, a fascinating investigation of marriage, and a potent testament to healing and empowerment through art.
(Cautiously) recommended.
