Review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) by Yash B — 29 Jun 2018
While "Day of the Soldado" isn't always as effectively told as the first "Sicario" it comes really close. This is primarily due to the strong performances from Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, the intensely unpredictable script, and grittiness of the movie.
A lot of the reviews I've been watching and reading online have been saying the first half is the strongest part of the film, but honestly, I think the second half is where the movie shines. The movie's most impactful themes and potential for an upcoming franchise are showcased in the second half.
Like the first film, the movie has some truly tension filled moments that had my heart racing. It is noticable since the director and cinematographer of the previous film aren't returning but overall the movie is competently directed.
I also think while the movie shows some brutal moments, the movie lacks the realism of the first and at times I felt very aware I was watching a movie and just had to go with it. It's a bold movie that has a gritty and intense storyline that fans of the first should get a kick out of.
