Review of Sicario (2015) by Noah A — 17 Jan 2016
Convoluted, confusing, and ultimately pointless. We never find out who Benicio's character is, or what motivates him to kill a (mostly) innocent cop. Basically the moral of the story is: you can't do anything about the status quo so you might as well perpetuate it.
While that may be the current state of affairs in the 'war on drugs' today, it's hardly inspiring to make an entire film based on that premise. Really it all feels like a long slow build-up to nothing at all.
It's ultimately anti-climactic and disappointing, and as the credits roll, one is left feeling distinctly underwhelmed. I understand how critics would enjoy such a gritty and depressing movie, but I do not understand the high audience rating.
And to call it as a "thriller" is a stretch to say the least. Less than one eighth of the film could be characterized as "thrilling". That's tantamount to describing the latest "Die Hard" as a foreign film because it features 15 minutes of Russian dialogue.
Highly not recommended.
