Review of Sicario (2015) by Sean N — 24 Jun 2018
Beautifully directed, strikingly brutal, and showcasing the best performance of Benicio del Toro's career, Sicario is Denis Villeneuve at the top of his game. What could have been a generic action thriller about America's battle with the drug cartels is elevated to a reflection on morality and brutality.
It's a well acted, well thought out, and ambitious piece of filmmaking. All that said, it is slow. Denis is a filmmaker's filmmaker, the kind of guy who is dedicated to the craft in a way that's been hampered by the studio system over the past thirty years.
Sit back, and drink it in. This is about atmosphere, tension, and reflection.
