Review of Shottas (2002) by Snuggles Inc. — 14 Oct 2008
This was a surprise addition to my movie watching history. My friend brought it over the other night and I thought I'd give it a chance since he promised there would be thick Jamaican accents (which I love to listen to) and also a Scarface inspired plot.
I think it would be best to stop comparing this film to Scarface immediately after stating that. This movie is a joke, really. It's an awful attempt at bringing a gritty look at the Jamaican mob to the big screen.
It's loaded with gratuitous sex, booty-shaking nudity, violence, and just about everything you'd expect to see in a Hype Williams video. But Hype Williams is infinitely more talented than Cess Silvera who films as if he were paging through a textbook on trite effects and editing.
I will say, though, that Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz put on incredible performances for the poor material they have to work with. Skip it if you're expecting too much.
