Review of Short Cuts (1993) by Chris F — 02 Jul 2007
A truly phenominal film from the late Robert Altman. What Altman did best was the ensemble piece, as this film, along with Nashville shows the iconic director at the top of his game. You can still see his influence in recent cinema particularly in Magnolia and Crash (although that film was far less successful).
The film juggles over almost 20 character, each of whom would have made an interesting film on their own, and while the film is quite lengthy, you never get the impression that your ass is going to fall asleep.
The performances are brilliant, particularly Lily Tomlin (an Altman favorite) as a guilt stricken waitress married to Tom Waitts.
