Review of Short Cuts (1993) by Brandon M — 27 Jan 2009
The film perfectly captures the 80's morphing into the 90's. It's worth watching just for it's hilarious fashions and style. But Cuts has a lot going on beneath the surface as well. Based on short stories by Raymond Carver, Altman is a master of pacing and melding a sprawling set of different and somewhat connected stories.
Great cast too- Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lili Taylor, Bruce Davison and Lori Singer (yes the girl from Footloose) are all great. But mad props go to Madeline Stowe and Julianne Moore for nailing a sisterly dynamic and Jack Lemmon who devastates.
The most annoying subplot here is the tumultuous relationship between diner waitress Lily Tomlin and drunkard Tom Waits and that's mostly because such a snappy actress like Tomlin seems incapable of playing someone dumb enough to buy into a relationship with such a lousy guy.
But most everything here is aces. Altman captures the spirit of Carver in new and unexpected ways.
