Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Josh C — 27 Mar 2008
On the first level, Shopgirl is an admirable and inspired plunge down the waters of a very particular love triangle. On the second level, it kisses the interesting themes of perpetual dissatisfaction and overprotected one-way relationships.
But, hmmm, on level zero, Shopgirl is not what I would call a memorable or entertaning experience-- and there has to be a limit of how precious or meaningful a movie can think it is. Nonetheless, the directing packs enough ''cute punches'' and the Danes-Schwartzman duo has enough spark for the plot to remain tolerable.
But I'm sorry, maybe this is just me, but I'm never gonna get to *really* like Steve Martin-- not in a shitcan family comedy, not in a cutesy existential lession.
