Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Sarah E — 15 Oct 2010
This is exactly what a film adaptation should be: faithful to the tone and spirit of its source material, respectful and loving of the characters, intelligent and honest in its telling. It's a perfectly adult glimpse of love, mature and poignant and quiet, comfortably quiet, which is strange for a film.
The intimate narration Martin provides in the novella isn't lost here; its so perfectly translated into the actors' non-verbal cues that it speaks in every scene through soft smiles, gentle touches, looks and facial cues.
Wonderful.
